Circuit Schematic & Components
To get this running, you will need:
Transistor: 2N2222 (NPN type).
Resistor: 10k Ohm (Brown-Black-Orange).
Secondary Coil: 300–500 turns of thin magnet wire on a PVC pipe.
Primary Coil: 2–3 turns of thick wire around the base of the PVC.
Power: 9V Battery.
🏗️ Step-by-Step Construction
1. The Secondary Coil (The “Tower”)
Wrap your thin enamelled copper wire around the PVC pipe.
Crucial: Sand off the insulation (the shiny coating) at both ends of the wire using sandpaper or a hobby knife until you see the bright copper. If you don’t do this, the electricity cannot flow into the circuit.
2. The Primary Coil
Wrap your thicker wire 2 or 3 times around the bottom of your secondary coil.
Tip: Do not tape it too tightly yet. Sometimes, if the coil doesn’t work, you simply need to flip the primary coil upside down to reverse the magnetic polarity.
3. Wiring the 2N2222 Transistor
Hold the transistor with the flat side facing you. From left to right, the pins are: Emitter (1), Base (2), and Collector (3).
Base (Middle Pin): 1. Solder one end of the 10k resistor here.
2. Solder the bottom wire of your Secondary Coil here.
Collector (Right Pin): 1. Solder one end of your Primary Coil here.
Emitter (Left Pin): 1. Connect this to the Negative (-) terminal of your battery.
4. Finalizing the Loop
Take the other end of the Primary Coil and the other end of the 10k resistor.
Connect both of them to the Positive (+) terminal of your 9V battery.
