Unlike a common transformer (like the one in a cell phone charger), the Tesla Coil doesn’t just depend on the number of turns between the primary and secondary windings. It depends on magnetic resonance.
For the discharge to occur, the primary and secondary circuits must be at the same frequency. When the frequencies match, energy is transferred extremely efficiently to the secondary, raising the voltage to thousands of volts.
